Protect yourself against snow blindness

protect yourself against snow blindness

Definition: Inflammation and photophobia caused by exposure of the eyes to ultraviolet rays reflected from snow and ice.

Snow Blindness is a painful, temporary loss of vision due to overexposure to the sun’s UV rays. The medical term for snow blindness is Photokeratitis (photo = light and keratitis = inflammation of the cornea). Essentially, snow blindness is caused by a sunburned eye or more specifically, a sunburned cornea.

The bright sun reflects off snow and ice in the beautiful winter landscapes and this directly burns the skin and eyes. It can also occur when the sun reflects on the water and white sand, along with using tanning beds.

The simple way to protect against snow blindness is by wearing good quality sunglasses or goggles that block 100% of the UV rays. The most effective ones have side shields. 2019’s most recommended goggle brands include Bolle, Oakley, Salamon, Scott, Dragon Alliance, Zeal and Atomic but there are lots more on the market with prices that suit everyone. For sunglasses, look at the UV protection label. Some brands to consider are Maui Jim, Rayban, Oakley, and Polaroid.
